What Is a Loose Slot Machine?

A loose slot machine can be defined in three ways:

  • It pays frequently (has a low volatility)
  • It has a high payback percentage
  • A combination of the above

In general, when people are looking to find the loosest slots in Las Vegas, what matters is the payback percentage. This is known as RTP and is the opposite of house edge.

For instance, if a slot has an RTP of 95%, it is expected to pay you $95 for every $100 staked (in the long run). This means that the house edge is 5%.

In Las Vegas, the RTP of slot machines can vary widely – anywhere from 80% up to 95%, or, in some rare instances slightly higher.

Comparing the Looseness of Slot Machines at Las Vegas Casinos

The Nevada Gaming Control Board regularly releases reports on the revenue made from slot machines in Las Vegas. They divide casinos into different areas, such as the Las Vegas Strip; Downtown Las Vegas and the Boulder Strip. The casinos with the loosest slots are those with the highest payback percentage (total amount won / total amount charged).

Based on Nevada Gaming Control Board’s report from 2018, the University of Nevada compared the three areas above and came to the conclusion that casinos on the Boulder Strip have the loosest slots. These are the results from the comparison:

Area Average Slot RTP Loosest Slot Machines
Las Vegas Strip 91.88% 93.61%
Downtown Las Vegas 92.36% 94.69%
Boulder Strip 94.26% 96.34%

The difference is huge as the average slot played on the Boulder Strip is expected to pay you 2.38% more than the average slot on the Las Vegas Strip. That’s $2.38 for every $100 staked!

Which Are the Loosest Slot Machines in Las Vegas?

According to Nevada Gaming Control Board’s report, multi-denominon type of slots are the loosest. In other words, these are the best paying slots in Vegas. They are closely followed by 5-cent machines.

Here’s a full breakdown of the report which compared the slots at all casinos in Las Vegas:

Type of Slot Looseness House-Edge
1 Cent 89.99% 10.01%
5 Cent 94.39% 5.61%
25 Cent 92.83% 7.17%
1 Dollar 93.61% 6.39%
Multi-denominon 94.74% 5.26%

Unfortunately, casinos in Las Vegas do not front with the RTP on their slots, which makes it difficult to know the exact looseness of a particular slot. The best you can do is follow the above table.

However, according to a source which we haven’t been able to confirm the legitimacy of, the Circus Circus casino is offering the loosest slot in Las Vegas. This is called Magnificent 7 and is said to have an RTP of 97.4%. However, the casino’s slots in general is only said to have an average RTP of 92.56%.
